Students / Licensing

A New York State Licence is required to practice speech pathology and/or audiology in all professional settings other than the public schools. Certification as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped is required for appointment in the public schools.

  • Requirements for the New York License in Speech-Language Pathology and/or Audiology
  • Requirements for New York State Certification as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped (TSHH)
    1. Master’s degree or its equivalent in Speech-Language Pathology and/or Audiology.
    2. Nine months of paid supervised work as a Speech-Language Pathologist and/or Audiologist.
    3. Passing of the National Examinations in Speech-Language Pathology and/or Audiology (NESPA).

    Requirements for New York State Certification as a Teacher of Students with speech language Disabilities (TSSLD)

    Initial Certificate (TSSLD)

    Academic: BA or BS degree including coursework in general education, speech and language disorders and special education.and student teaching of children with communication disorders.
    State testing: Candidates for professional certification must pass the a) Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST); b) Written assessment of Teaching Skills (ATS-W

    Permanent Certification (TSSLD)

    Academic: Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology
    State testing:
    Professional certification must be obtained within three years of after receiving the initial certification.
